Preschool News Week of 3/1/2013

We had a great week back from February Vacation!  The students and teachers seemed well rested, and ready to tackle the remainder of the school year!  We’ve made it to March – sometimes it feels like we just started our school year J.  It’s been a year of trials and errors, but that is what makes preschool so fun and exciting.  The children are leading the way they want to communicate and learn, and often times, it’s as if the students are teaching us! J  Needless to say, it’s been a fun and fast paced school year thus, far, and we are eager to see what the remaining 3 months have in store for everyone!

We are excited to welcome our new fearless leader, Kim Matthews!  She is a veteran teacher and consultant here at GBSD, and we are thrilled to have her as a part of our team.  She has taken this week to learn about the program and our children through observation, and we look forward to implementing three classroom environments on Monday, with a focus on KindeReady skills for our transitioning students.  There is never a dull moment in preschool!

This week, we continued our Community Helpers theme, with a focus on “Firefighters and Fire Safety”.  We enjoyed learning vocabulary such as firefighter, fire, safety, fire hose, ladder, fire truck, badge, fire hydrant, siren, emergency (911), fire alarm, smoke detector, extinguisher, fire station and fire drill.  Yesterday, we had two REAL fire drills at school, and we got the opportunity to see two large fire trucks and several firefighters.  The children that were present did a fabulous job of being prepared and focused, and luckily, there was no harm done at the school J.  The students have really enjoyed the dramatic play area, themed books in our reading center, playing with fire trucks and soapy water in our sensory table, and creating art projects in the art center.  Our ASL/English Book of the Week was “Firefighters” – a non-fiction book about the job of a firefighter!

Our Community Helper for next week is: Police Officers!  Here is a sneak peak at the vocabulary – Police Officer, cop, siren, cop car/cruiser, safety, lights, help, emergency (911), badge, uniform, speeding ticket, fingerprint.
