We enjoyed our topic, The Carrot Seed and the related activities in our developmental centers. In our morning meetings, we reviewed the parts of carrots, our vocabulary and spring songs on the smartboard. We worked hard on developing different math skills – all related to the story The Carrot Seed – such as counting, patterns, shapes, measuring and graphing. We also worked on writing skills, as well as cutting and drawing pictures of different foods. In our drama play, children had fun being the gardener! We had a nice art project on carrots, and we were very busy at the sensory table with beans and soil.

Of course we read the story, The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss, which is about a little boy who remains confident in his carrot seed’s potential.

Next week, we will continue our insects/bugs unit. Through this unit, we are fulfilling certain Maine Early Childhood Guidelines such as:

  1. Early Language & Literacy: retell information from a story.
  2. Creative Arts: use different art media and materials.
  3. Math: match a number of objects with written numeral.

Our new vocabulary for next week will be: caterpillars, butterflies, spiders, ladybugs, bumblebees, worms, beetles, snails, slug, firefly, cricket, grasshoppers, ants, insect, and bug. It should be exciting and fun!
