Learning Language Through Daily Routines…

 WELCOME ALL TO PIT!!

We has a fantastic showing at our first Parent, Infant, Toddler Playgroup. We had a wonderful time exploring our new environment and welcoming new families.

Busy

For the first few weeks we will focus on developing language through the mealtime routine.  We modeled strategies for developing listening and spoken language skills as well as provided vocabulary and strategies for families who are working to enhance their child’s ASL skills.

We enjoyed our explorations so much that we decided to do it again!! The families engaged in language expansion activities and one of our little friends learned the word “dandelion” after a discussion of expanding vocabulary models to include these specific names after general names for items are learned.

Parent Infant Toddler Playgroup – May 14th

This week at P.I.T., we welcomed our friends with coloring and talking about hopping speckled frogs and flying butterflies.  Then we hit the great outdoors!

Our walk around the island was spectacular! We explored and named flowers, sticks, pine cones, trees, water and acorns. We retouched on the benefits of reinforcing a child’s vocabulary through real life experiences. We expanded vocabulary by finding, naming and smelling types of flowers, such as dandelions and lupines.

There were so many new things to talk about we may walk the island again at the next P.I.T on May 28th. Please join us on Mackworth Island at 10 am.

Parent Infant Toddler Playgroup – April 30th

 SPRING IS HERE!!

This past PIT, we talked about spring and played with dirt, sticks and grass in a sand table. We learned about ducks, turtles and more spring things. We encouraged parents to talk to their children about the world around them. Naming objects in nature that they see and touch will encourage vocabulary development. When a word or noun is learned you can begin expanding this language by adding modifiers to the known words. “oh look, you found a stick” can expand into, “I see a BIG or LITTLE stick.” This is an easy everyday way to expand your child’s language.

Next PIT, we will be taking a real life adventure of our own! Join us as we walk on the beautiful trail around Mackworth Island. We will explore more of nature’s language all around us. See you on May 14th!

Parent Infant Toddler Playgroup- April 9th

We had a great morning practicing tummy time, exploring GAK, and singing/ reading about ducks!
5 LittleDucks
5 Little ducks went out one day…
Over the hills and far away…
Mommy duck called with a quack, quack, quack….
Only 4 little ducks came waddling back.

Our ASL/ Spoken English story “See How They Grow: Duck” depicted a real duck from the egg to white feathers.  We discussed the importance of providing real experiences and images as well as drawn or cartoon images to children to create a more in depth understanding of the world around them.  This story also demonstrated ways to incorporate a variety of words in describing the actions of creatures- shake, dabble, waddle, swim, paddle, etc.- to expand on language further.
This and other stories can be found at:

Our next play group meets April 30th from 10:00-12:00.
