The Portland Board of Public Education on Feb. 3 recognized two Portland High School students for their achievements in the annual Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.
PHS freshman Taylor Gagnon and senior Courtney Camire were part of a Governor Baxter School for the Deaf team that recently competed successfully in the event in Rome, N.Y.
There were 17 schools participating from the Northeast, with only four winners qualifying to compete nationally at Gallaudet University in April.
The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf team won fourth place overall and now qualifies for an all-expenses-paid trip to the nationals. This is the first time students from Baxter have made it to the nationals.
Taylor and Courtney were commended by the School Board. Portland Public Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk said, “We would like to thank their teachers, Lenore Boerner and Shannon Winter, and recognize Courtney and Taylor for their accomplishments. Congratulations!”
