Exploring Shadows and Reflections

Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful and restful spring vacation.

For the next few weeks we will be exploring shadow creation and reflections.

We’ve created several centers in our classrooms that encourage the children to get creative with shadows. We’ve prepared some paper and dowel puppets to use with the LCD projector and an overhead projector to cast shadows on the wall. Yesterday the children had the puppets interacting with each other and today we practiced tracing their shadows on paper. It took a lot of patience and cooperation as the children worked in pairs, one holding the puppet still while the other traced the shadow. Some children attempted tracing the silhouettes of their friends but that proved to be more difficult than expected!

Some children practiced spelling their names on a light box using colorful letters while others taped the letters of their name to a black piece of construction paper. The pieces of paper were placed in the window with the hopes that the sun will fade the paper surrounding the letters, leaving a “shadow” letter in its place.

We’ve added mirrors to our dress-up center to encourage the children to admire their reflections :)
